Why do students take out large loans for unmarketable degrees like art and philosophy?
Rockland S asked:
With a degree in art or philosophy and student loans of 50k+ it’s likely you will be living in poverty for several years!

Do students take these loans out because of ignorance or do they know how hard it’s going to be?

It’s not stupidity or ignorance. They are following their passion because that is what they love to do. And contrary to what you believe art and philosophy can make you good money. Just depends on what you do with it. And the same goes with ANY degree you acquire. And in the end, if they end up doing something they love, more power to them. It’s better than being miserable in a job they hate just because it PAYS well. Now ……THAT’S stupid.

It’s called they are studying what they love. Why spend four years as a business major and not be happy when you could take your passion of studio art? They’d rather struggle and get a job doing what they love and not make as much rather then working in a gray, small cubicle making a lot of money.
I’d rather have the unmarketable degree like a language major but a business minor. ^_^

They take out the loans because they want to spend their lives doing something that they are passionate about; regardless of living in poverty. A grad in my major (clinical lab science) will only start out about 40-50k a year; however, I still take out the loans to finish, because I have a passion for medical science and diagnostic testing.
I say all of this; however, most college students probably are ignorant to how hard it will be paying of loans. But its a harsh reality that is unfortunatly necessary.

A lot of places don’t care what your degree is in, just that you have a degree. It shows you have the commitment/drive to follow through with something.
